JOMASS-Green Project Updates - Press Release from MEMSERV.DE
Presentation of the JOMASS-GreenProject Concept to the Technical Committee of the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR)
Amman-Berlin, 27 November 2024
The JOMASS-Green project concept was presented today to the technical committee of the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan. The presentation was delivered by Eng. Yahya Hamed, General Manager of MEMSERV.DE, and Eng. Khaled Abu-Al Shaikh, Renewable Energy Director of Mass Energy Group Holding.
JOMASS-Green is a strategic project being planned and developed by MEMSERV.DE in order from and in collaboration with Mass Energy Group Holding. Mass Energy Group Holding is a leading provider of electrical and renewable energy in the Middle East, with an electricity generation capacity exceeding 8 GW in Iraq. The company also owns and operates wind and solar power facilities in Jordan, Sudan, Iraq, and several other countries worldwide.
The primary objective of the JOMASS-Green project is to produce 500 metric tons per day (MTPD) of green ammonia, equivalent to 180,000 metric tons annually. The green ammonia produced is intended to be partially supplied to the local fertilizer industry in Aqaba, while the remainder is intended for export to Europe. A significant market demand for green ammonia is expected to emerge in Europe in the coming years, driven by the revised European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the national green hydrogen strategies of various European countries. The JOMASS green project initiative began with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Mass Energy Group Holding in November 2023. Following this agreement, the Renewable Energy Department of Mass Energy Group Holding and MEMSERV.DE initiated close and intensive collaboration to develop the JOMASS-Green concept. This work involved technological research, technical and basic engineering studies, participation in workshops and roundtable meetings, and extensive technical follow up and discussions with key green hydrogen and green Ammonia stakeholders in Jordan. These stakeholders included MEMR, Aqaba Development Company (ADC), the Jordanian Ministry of Environment (MOENV), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the German international engineering consulting company ILF, which serves as a technical consultant to MEMR for planning and developing green hydrogen and green Ammonia infrastructure in Jordan. The developed basic project concept takes into account the local regulatory and infrastructure conditions, as well as expected future developments in Jordan. It outlines a modular project development strategy for the proposed green ammonia plant, which is anticipated to be built in the planned green hydrogen hub in Aqaba, the seaport city on the Gulf of Aqaba in southern Jordan. The JOMASS-Green modular project concept was designed with the aim of achieving a reasonable balance between two key objectives: mitigating investment risks, particularly those associated with market and technology development, while maximizing the commercial value and economic potential by positioning the targeted JOMASS-Green plant as one of the first green ammonia producers in Jordan and the Middle East region. The submitted technical report confirmed the basic technical feasibility of the project. The key required technologies have been identified, and a framework for the project's economic evaluation has been proposed. In the next project phases, comprehensive basic engineering for the main systems and equipment is planned, along with a detailed feasibility study
